Fiona Dawson to Receive Knights Out Leadership Award

Fiona Dawson is an Emmy®-nominated multi-media director, producer and writer. She directed the Emmy®-nominated New York Times' short opinion documentary "Transgender, at War and in Love," in partnership with SideXSide Studios and created the media project "TransMilitary," which intimately shares the lives of American transgender troops risking discharge as they work to end the discriminatory ban upon their service. Fiona freelances for NBC News' NBC OUT and creates media to educate, entertain and inspire.

She has previously filmed stories in India on sex trafficking, prostitution and HIV/AIDS and hosted segments for HereTV during the 2012 Republican and Democratic conventions. In 2015 Fiona was honored by The White House for her work as an "LGBT Artist Champion of Change." She was voted Houston's Female Grand Marshal for the 2009 LGBT Pride Parade, has served on the National Board of Directors of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and on the Board of Directors for the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA). 


Today, Fiona and her co-directors Gabriel Silverman and Jamie Coughlin of SideXSide Studios slate their feature documentary sharing the inspiring story of service members and allies achieving open transgender service, TransMilitary, to be released in late 2017.
