Dan Choi will be walking from Selma to Fresno on Saturday, May 30th, from 8 am to 1 pm, then giving a speech on ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ at the “MEET IN THE MIDDLE FOR EQUALITY” events. Please stop by and say hi to Dan if you’re in the area.
This just in from Out Knight Laura Slattery, Class of 1988 in the Bay Area:
Join the Women of Color Resource Center in their “Do Tell” storytelling training and retreat where you can create a digital story of your time in the military focusing on the impact of the military’s policies and how they affected you. The storytelling training is for Women of Color LGBTQ veterans, White GLBTQ veteran allies, and Women of Color Straight veteran allies of the U.S. military. It is in Oakland 27-31 May.
This “Do Tell” Project is a great counter to the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Check out the stories from last year at Colored Girls
Alan J. Craft, USMA 1987, is a straight graduate of West Point, and was the first Knights Out member to report back on his outreach to his Congresswoman, Sue Myrick (Republican) from North Carolina. He said, “I may be straight but I feel very strongly about my brothers and sisters in arms…..if blood is thicker than water, then those of us who would willingly join, serve, and risk spilling our own blood to defend freedom must surely stand together.” Thank you, Alan!
A storm is brewing over President Obama’s refusal to intercede on the behalf of Dan Choi, an Arabic translator and lieutenant in the U.S. Army who was just dismissed for being gay. Choi went on the “Rachel Maddow Show” last week and said he intends “to fight it tooth and nail,” and that this kind of behavior “weakens the military.” 54 Arabic translators (and hundreds more servicemen) have been dismissed from the Army due to their sexuality.
Jon Stewart excoriated President Bush for his policies and President Obama for flip-flopping on the issue, saying:
“So it was okay to waterboard a guy 80 times but God forbid the guy who could understand what that prick was saying has a boyfriend? Waterboarding may make a prisoner talk, but it ain’t gonna make him talk English.”
He then introduced the following segment on the issue, in which John Oliver supported the Army’s choice with the “he’s gay” defense. He eventually screamed at Stewart saying, “I will not let you Cramer me.”

OBAMA UNWILLING TO RETAIN LT. DAN CHOI
But White House Spokesperson Reiterates Obama Support to Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
WEST POINT, NY, May 12, 2009 – As West Point graduates, other veterans, and supporters flooded the White House with calls today asking the President not to fire Lieutenant Dan Choi, press secretary Robert Gibbs reiterated the President’s intent to change the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law. However, he indicated that the President would take his time pursuing legislative action, and would not sign an executive order in the interim to suspend gay discharges while Congress deliberates.
