First Report from Operation RECESS RECON

Alan J.  Craft, USMA 1987, is a straight graduate of West Point, and was the first Knights Out member to report back on his outreach to his Congresswoman, Sue Myrick (Republican) from North Carolina.  He said, “I may be straight but I feel very strongly about my brothers and sisters in arms…..if blood is thicker than water, then those of us who would willingly join, serve, and risk spilling our own blood to defend freedom must surely stand together.” Thank you, Alan!

Alan said it was ok for us to share his letter to her with you in hopes that it will inspire you to schedule your own visit.  If at all possible, please schedule an in-person visit with your Congressperson while they are home on recess.  We’ve learned that an in-person visit is the best possible way to influence them.  If you cannot visit, a phone call is second best, then email.  We don’t recommend writing snail-mail at all - they get screened by security and often never end up there.

Alan, thank you so much for this letter!  And we hope you’ll be able to follow it up with an in-person visit!

Alan’s Letter:

“Rep. Myrick, I am proud to be from your district. And once again I am writing you to support some legislation. Please support the MREA.  I am a graduate of West Point, a veteran of the gulf war, husband, father, and staunch republican. I see our military forces fighting foes here and abroad. The proud men and women who serve this nation should not be forced to sacrifice their freedom of choice in order to defend ours. I served with many honorable folks who have been found out or later come out of the closet and quit over the shame of having to hide themselves behind a cloak of dishonesty in order to defend freedom. I have steadfastly told each that I have been blessed to know that I value their service to this nation above all else and that they have nothing to be sorry for except the small mindedness of those who presume to judge us here on earth. That is for God alone to decide. He has his purpose for each of us and intolerance is a test for both sides. May we pass the test and the legislation. Freedom is not free. This memorial day weekend let us remember not only those who have sacrificed their lives but also the countless many who have sacrificed part of their souls, minds, dignity, and honor in order to defend our freedoms.

Thank you.”
